With the start of 2012 it’s Thane week for Puducherry, Cuddalore and its surroundings. No one expected adverse effects in areas other than coastal regions but yeah, The Lignite City can be given 3 stars out of 5 for the Thane effect. As a resident of Neyveli T.S. I always love to enjoy the clean roads and green toppings of my township. I consider the happy green trees as prized possessions of Neyveli. I feel proud to show Neyveli in Google maps to my friends who react with a big ‘aaahh..!!’ after seeing the priceless green blanket of Neyveli. Here every house has at least a single big Mango tree, Neem tree in plurals and collections of jack fruit, coconut, lemon and other trees the list extends like a Stephen Hawking’s lecture on the big-bang. But with the arrival of New Year 2012, these crowns of my town were taken away by the terrific Thane. Thane swallowed them all and Neyveli looked sad after the visit of visit of Thane. With innumerable number of trees uprooted, Neyveli almost had the worst cyclone hit in its history. Post-Thane, The Power City is powerless and people struggled for drinking water. With fallen trees and over head cables on roads, the power supply was cut and due to the prolonged ‘no power’ situation water supply was cut. The damaged grid towers hampered power restoration.
For a Neyvelian these conditions are like getting lost in a dense forest. For all these drastic effects, I cursed Thane but I would like to thank Thane as it had shown me the real face of the mankind. The Town Ship administration has strict rules to cut down the trees. Now, after facing Thane, many trees have fallen on roofs and cars, and so they can be cleared off without paying any fine to the administration. Taking this as an advantage, people started cut down even healthy trees. To answer any question regarding this, they have a readymade question in response ‘what if another Thane comes??’ But the truth is that they don’t want to spend time in taking care of the trees. They consider this as a good chance to get rid of the trees. When nature calls for responsibility, mankind calls for another calamity. The availability of petrol powered modern saw made the job easier. They pay Rs.5000 for cutting down two big trees and the rate increases rapidly with increase in number. The cutters earn more than the price of the machine, which is just Rs.6,500. Price of a single candle had shoot up to Rs.20. A half litre milk packet which has M.R.P. Rs.15 is being sold for Rs.20 and when I asked the shop owner, he said ‘adjust pannu thambi..’ and yeah, they all show their ‘need to become millionaires’ now. With all these negativities prevailing, one can notice culprits looting the fallen wires from the street lamps which will add more load on E.B. officials. S**** the human attitude! But Yeah! Non- availability of power, water, damaged roofs, sandwiched cars, woods on roads, made me a responsible son, brother and etc… I realized how much a litre of water is worth, how much a roof served me and so on. Thane showed me the different colours and faces of my own society. Very big thanks to Thane for teaching me more than the two years of Engineering.
